Save Tasmanian's Forests – Petition

April 8, 2020, is when 356 000 hectares of forests that should be in reserves become available for logging. These forests, called Future Potential Production Forests by the Tasmanian Liberal Government, have been in a moratorium since 2012.

Logging forest nature reserves. With proven High Conservation Values (HCVs). In a climate and extinction crisis. On top of the 800,000 hectares of public state forests, Suss Timber Tasmania already logs. It's an outrage.

Worse still, over $400 million of public money was used to compensate the logging industry, which agreed to protect these areas in exchange. But now it says it wants to log them anyway and Premier Gutwein is only too happy to help.

These threatened forests include:

• 100 000 hectares in takayna / Tarkine
• Vast stretches of on Tasmania's east coast from Blue Tier in the North to surrounds of Ben Lomond and Douglas-Apsley National Parks.
• Swift Parrot habitat of Wielangta and Bruny Island.
• Tracts of the Great Western Tiers.

Sign this petition telling Tasmania's 'Premier for Climate Change', Peter Gutwein to stop this public policy madness.

Tasmania and the rest of the world need forests to stay intact for climate, wildlife, environment, and society

Stop logging native forests in Tasmania and the rest of Australia. Stop misusing taxpayer money to fund an industry so hugely in debt and uneconomic that any other company would have been put in receivership years ago. We need the wild places.

The logging of old growth forest MUST STOP! This is an absolute discrace and an unnecessary action of greed over environment and all future life on earth. How dare you politicians to think you have the right to exploit this stolen land. Clayton.

There is nothing quite so rare as an old growth forest on our planet these days. We must protect what is left.

Old growth forests and native forests are habitat for species whether they are endangered, threatened or just plain surviving. It is totally wrong and unacceptable to log these remaining forests. Tasmania is known for its many different forests eg its rainforests and to open them up to logging after an agreement was reached by all parties even though no one got exactly what they wanted is simply a political game by this government. I ask that Premier Gutwein stop immediately and reimplement the hard negotiated/won first agreement. He is pandering to a few.

We have been so quick, efficient, and effective in dealing with the COVID-19 health crisis and I applaud the government’s efforts in this action. We need the same urgency applied to dealing with the imminent threat of a changing climate. Now is the time to keep carbon in the ground and out of the atmosphere. Now is the time to make the big decisions that save us from catastrophe. Now is the time to listen to the scientists. Don’t make the same mistakes that Donald Trump has made during COVID-19 by sticking with the same old capitalist and economy first story.
