Plans by LNP Leader Deb Frecklington to imprison peaceful protesters for 10 years are imported straight from Beijing, environmentalist Bob Brown said today.
‘I am surprised Ms Frecklington didn’t go the whole hog and promise re- education camps for those holding a different point of view to hers.’
‘Fortunately, the High Court of Australia has ruled there is an implied right of peaceful protest in Australia. Even Ms Frecklington cannot legislate that right away.’
‘This is not about jobs. It is not being sought by the unions. It is about multinational coal and gas companies lobbying weak politicians to ride roughshod over the majority and growing public opposition to fossil fuel mining in an age of climate emergency.’
‘With the Frecklington laws, the Franklin River would be dammed, the Daintree rainforests logged and Kakadu mined,’ Bob Brown said.
