“PM Morrison has told his new Environment Minister she will not be representing Australia at the crucial International Whaling Commission meeting in Brazil next week. Instead, he is sending lowly Senator Anne Ruston, Assistant Minister for International Development and the Pacific. So Australia is sending a non-cabinet assistant minister, who has nothing to do with protecting the environment, to a vital meeting in which Japan, which has the chair, hopes to upend the global moratorium on commercial whaling. This is an insult to every Australian voter concerned about the protection of our whales,” Brown said.
“Assistant Minister Ruston says she will be at the meeting on 8-10 of September but the International Whaling Commission says the meeting is from 10-14 September. It seems like Senator Ruston will miss the main event anyway,” Brown said.
The Bob Brown Foundation will hold a protest outside the Japanese Embassy in Canberra on Tuesday to protest Japan’s bloody whaling program and intention to open the floodgates to commercial whaling.
