The Hodgman majority Liberal Government is getting on with the job of hosting the spread of feral deer into the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area, Bob Brown Foundation says, following yesterday’s fact-free press release on the issue from minister Guy Barnett.
“The government has now had years to implement a program, including non-recreational culling, to keep the world heritage area free of marauding feral deer but has done nothing on the ground except waffle,” Bob Brown said today.
“When the deer arrive at Cradle Mountain or Lake St Clair in coming years, displacing native wildlife, degrading native forest and grassland ecosystems and ruining the pristine reputation of Tasmania’s wilderness areas, this government’s negligence will be sheeted home.”
“While anectdotal reports indicate that the deer population is exploding in Tasmania, minister Guy Barnett is asleep at the wheel. He has offered no public report on the spread of feral deer in the Tarkine, towards the Walls of Jerusalem, west in the Great Western Tiers, into the Ben Lomond National Park or south towards the Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park. His ineptitude is allowing an unnecessary environmental tragedy to unfold inside Tasmania’s greatest natural assets,” Brown said.
