On 23rd June 2021 the Antarctic treaty – designed to protect the continent and Southern Ocean and promote peace and science - celebrates 60 years of coming into force. However, despite international cooperation there is little to celebrate unless we drastically reduce greenhouse gas emissions as promised under the Paris agreement.
On top of that large scale infrastructure projects are being proposed, while marine and terrestrial protected areas are severely lacking.
The future of Antarctica is at risk.
The climate crisis will turn the Antarctic ecosystem upside down and melting glaciers will change global coastlines forever, primarily displacing communities who've contributed least to the climate crisis.
