The Big Canopy Campout 2020

This year’s global Big Canopy Campout event in October is destined to be one of the most significant aerial camping events in the history of forest defence.

This time around, the international stage will be showcasing and raising funds for the last largest remaining tract of cool temperate rainforest in the world, Tasmania’s takayna/Tarkine.

To build on the significance of this event, the campout will be held in areas of still threatened rainforest. Industrial logging operations at the crux of an environmental, climate emergency, when species extinction is driven by habitat loss and the lungs of the earth are being systematically shredded for woodchips, it is insanity. And we want the world to know.

Over the 16th, 17th and 18th October we will be taking to the forest canopies to defend and protect, showcase and expose these incredible Gondwanan relics. The soft lush understories clad in lichen and mosses will be our basecamp setting. Aloft in immense towering giants, perched, poised for camping in the crisp nights there will be forest defenders, community activists, locals, photographers, conservationists, scientists, families, elders, and all those in-between who care and are aware of the fragility of these spaces.

We will be occupying and defending locations that are at imminent threat by logging. The message will travel loud and clear to the whole world that Australia is still clearing pristine Rainforests.

During the weekend, as the world awakes, BIG Canopy Campers will be opening their eyes among hundreds of others across the globe who will be taking part in this Event. As dawn breaks from Tasmania to London, Malaysia to Russia, dozens of trees in forests, back yards and parks will be filled with Canopy Campers climbing up for global Forests.

Everyone is welcome

You don’t need to be able to climb! There are opportunities to learn if you are inclined, however, this is a completely inclusive event that will need all the people helping out. The purpose is to be in the trees whether you are in a hammock just off the ground for the afternoon, or spend 3 nights in a Portaledge peering down at the forest canopy from 60m up, it’s about experiencing these wild places and taking part.

If you are in Tasmania and would like to get involved in our event contact erik@bobbrown.org.au or RSVP below and we will get in contact with you.
